Online Security
Step 3: Use Up-To-Date Antivirus/Antispyware
Antivirus software can identify, contain, and, if possible, repair files on your computer that are infected with a virus, worm, or other malicious program. Real-time scanning can keep your computer from becoming infected in the first place.
Virus definitions are only as effective as they are up to date. Update your virus definitions at least once a week, or set the updates to be downloaded automatically.
Here you can download a free antivirus and antispyware protection software.
AVG free software
How can I tell if I have antivirus software?
Go to Start > Programs (or All Programs). Click on the name of the product to bring up a control window.
Many computers come with antivirus software preloaded. It includes a six to twelve month subscription. If you purchased the computer over a year ago, you may need to re-subscribe or install new antivirus software.
How can I tell if my anti-virus software is up to date? How do I update it?
Open the antivirus program. The control window should display the date of the most recent update. Look for an update feature. If the subscription to the product has expired, you will not be able to download new virus definitions.
I do not have antivirus software. How can I tell if my system is infected?
You can scan your computer with an online virus detection scan. It will scan all files on the computer. The scan can take 30 to 60 minutes to run depending on the speed of the connection and the number of files to be scanned.
Here is a few online virus scanners.
HouseCall™ Free Scan
BitDefender Free Scan
The online scan will return a summary of the number of files scanned, the number of files infected, and the names of the viruses found. The online scan may try to disinfest the files for you, or you may need to download the appropriate virus removal tool and follow the instructions to remove the virus. The disadvantage to using the online virus detection scan is that it will not prevent your system from becoming infected in the future. For maximum protection, install antivirus software on your computer and keep it up to date.
